Free

Free. Really free.

Everything is in: every gesture, every key, the media buttons and presentation mode. There's no moment where the app asks for money.

Why is it free?

FreeMouse is made by A Brand New Company, as our calling card. We build apps and websites. Instead of telling you what we can do, we'd rather show it, with an app you use every day. We don't make money on it, and we don't need to.

Will it stay that way? Yes. No ads or subscription will be added later either. Curious what else we make? Have a look at abn.company.

How it works

Set up in a minute.

You install a small helper on your Mac once. After that you open the app and you're connected. You don't need a mouse for it: you pair with the camera or with a code.

  1. FreeMouse
    FreeMouse
    Applications

Install the helper on your Mac.

Download FreeMouse for your Mac and drag it to Applications. Open it, and a small mouse appears in your menu bar. Free, and checked for malware by Apple.

  2. Allow Accessibility once.

Your Mac only lets an app move the pointer and type once you approve it. The helper opens the right spot in System Settings. Switch FreeMouse on, and the check turns green by itself.

  3. Scan the code with your iPhone.

Open FreeMouse on your iPhone and point the camera at the code on your Mac. Rather type it? That works too. The code works once, and only while the window is open.

  4. Then: open the app and you're connected.

Your iPhone finds your Mac within a second, also after sleep or a restart. At the top you always see what's going on, in plain words.

Gestures

Feels like your MacBook’s trackpad.

The whole screen is your trackpad. With the gestures you already know, a tap you feel at every click and scrolling that keeps gliding when you let go.

  • Tap

Click. You feel a light tap in your hand.

  • Two-finger tap

Right click, for the menu with more options.

  • Two-finger slide

Scroll, smooth and with momentum, just like on your MacBook.

  • Three fingers up

Mission Control: all your windows at a glance.

  • Three fingers sideways

Move to the next desktop or a full screen app.

  • Pinch

Zoom in and out of photos, maps and pages.

  • Tap and drag

Tap, keep your finger down and drag. That's how you move files and windows.

    • A tap in your hand at every click
    • Natural scrolling follows your Mac
    • Set your own speed and scrolling
    • Left-handed? Put the scroll strip on the left
    • Landscape and on iPad
    • Practise without a Mac
Typing

Type in any language.

What you type on your iPhone shows up on your Mac straight away. There's no send button. Accented letters, emoji and dictation arrive exactly as typed, whatever keyboard layout your Mac uses.

  • The Mac keys includedesc, tab, cmd, option, control, shift, the arrows and delete, in a row above your keyboard.
  • Keys never get stuckIf the connection drops in the middle of a shortcut, your Mac lets go of every key within three seconds.

Media and presenting

The remote you already carry.

Start a film from the couch, or click through your slides at work. There are big buttons for that, so you don't have to look.

  • Brightness down
  • Brightness up
  • Mute
  • Previous and next, bigThe buttons send the arrow keys, which every presentation app understands.
  • Black screen and stopAll eyes on you for a moment: one tap turns the screen black. Stop ends the show.
  • A timer on your phoneYou see how long you've been talking. And while you're connected, your screen stays on.
Safety

Safe, in plain words.

An app that controls your Mac has to earn your trust. This is how FreeMouse does that.

  • Pairing with a one-time code

Your Mac shows a QR code with a secret code. It works once, for two minutes, and only while the pairing window is open.

  • Everything encrypted

Every movement and every letter travels encrypted from your iPhone to your Mac. Even a password you type can't be read along the way.

  • Nobody else on your wifi

Housemates, colleagues or someone in the café: a device your Mac doesn't know doesn't even get an answer, let alone the mouse.

  • You always see it

When an iPhone is connected, the little mouse in your menu bar gets an arc and tells you which iPhone it is.

  • Pause with one click

Not now? Choose Pause in the menu bar and your iPhone does nothing until you carry on.

  • Keystrokes are never kept

What you type goes straight to your Mac and is never stored or logged. Not by the app, and not by us.

  • Remove devices

Devices lists every iPhone you ever paired. Click Remove and that iPhone can't get in anymore.

  • Checked by Apple

The helper is signed and checked for malware by Apple. It only asks for Accessibility, not to watch your screen or your own keyboard.

Questions

What people ask.

More answers and the setup steps are on Support.

Question not here?

Email info@abn.company. We answer within a few working days.

Why does FreeMouse ask for Accessibility on my Mac?

Your Mac only lets an app move the pointer, click and type once you approve it, under Accessibility in System Settings. FreeMouse uses that permission for exactly that: doing what you do on your iPhone.

It doesn't read your screen and doesn't watch your own keyboard. That's why FreeMouse doesn't ask for Input Monitoring either. You can switch the permission off whenever you like.

Do my iPhone and Mac need to be on the same wifi network?

Yes. FreeMouse talks straight from your iPhone to your Mac, over your own wifi. Nothing goes through the internet or a server.

A guest network or a VPN can keep devices apart. How to fix that is on Support.

Does it work with my Mac's firewall?

Yes. Your Mac lets signed apps like FreeMouse through by default. If your Mac does ask whether FreeMouse may accept connections, choose Allow. If your firewall is set to Block all incoming connections, Support explains what to switch on.

Which Mac and which iPhone do I need?

A Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later, with Apple silicon or Intel. And an iPhone with iOS 17 or later.

Does it work on iPad?

Yes, on iPad with iPadOS 17 or later. On the big screen the trackpad and keyboard sit side by side.

Is there a version for Windows or Android?

Later, yes. First we make iPhone and Mac as good as they can be. When Windows or Android is ready, it'll be on this page.

Do I need internet?

Not to control your Mac. Your iPhone and Mac only need to be on the same network. You only need internet to download the apps.

Why does my iPhone ask for access to the local network?

That's how FreeMouse finds your Mac on your wifi. iPhone asks this for every app that looks for devices at home. Allow it. Without it, your iPhone can't see your Mac.

Is it really free?

Yes. There are no ads, no subscription and no paid version. FreeMouse is A Brand New Company's calling card. We don't make money on it, and we don't mean to.

Your Mac, from the couch.

Put the helper on your Mac now. The iPhone app is coming soon to the App Store, free as well.
